There is no cure for endometriosis, but there are many treatments for
symptoms it causes.
The goal of endometriosis
treatment includes pain relief and enhancement of
fertility.
Talk with your doctor about what option is
best for you.
Finding a doctor with whom you feel comfortable is crucial in
managing and treating endometriosis.
You may also want to get a
second opinion before starting any treatment regimen to be sure
you know all of your options and the possible outcomes.
The treatment you choose will depend on
- severity of your signs and symptoms,
- your age,
- your plans for getting pregnant.
Major treatments discussed below will address 3
types:
-
Pain
treatment (medical)
- Endometriosis implants and scar
treatment (hormonal
and
surgical)
-
Infertility treatment
There are also other treatments that are
aimed to ease signs and symptoms of endometriosis.
Alternative treatments.
Alternative treatments for relieving the painful symptoms of endometriosis
include traditional
- Chinese medicine,
- nutritional approaches,
- exercise,
- yoga,
- homeopathy,
- acupuncture,
- allergy management
- immune therapy.
Trying alternative methods of pain relief may be benefical to you as long as
they are not harmful to your condition.
Keep in mind that these options may help relieve the pain of endometriosis, they
won't cure the condition.
Pregnancy.
While it can't be considered a "treatment" for endometriosis, pregnancy may
relieve endometriosis-related pain.
Ovulation and menstruation stops during pregnancy, and it's menstruation that
triggers the pain of endometriosis.
Endometrial tissue become less active during pregnancy, and may not be as
painful or large without hormonal stimulation.
However, in some cases, once the pregnancy and breastfeeding end and
menstruation returns, symptoms may also return.
