In United States about 5 million women have endometriosis.
This means that endometriosis is one of the most common health problems for women.
Endometriosis can affect menstruating women of any age or race; in general, women with endometriosis:
- get their regular monthly period
- are 27-years-old on average
and it usually takes several years after the onset of menstruation
(menarche) to develop
- have symptoms for 2 to 5 years before finding out they have
endometriosis
Women who have gone through menopause rarely still have symptoms.
When menstruation ends
permanently with menopause or temporarily with pregnancy, the
signs and symptoms of endometriosis stop.
They can begin again
after pregnancy when menstruation resumes.
Rarely, hormone
replacement therapy after menopause can reactivate the disorder.
